Pet Sitting
by Pearson’s Professional Pet Services is watching or visiting your dog, cat and pet in Broomfield, Lakewood, Golden, Arvada, Westminster, and West Metro Denver, and doing whatever you ask us to do.
A friend of mine asked me to describe what it means to be a pet sitter. My first reaction was to say, it isn’t much. You go to a house and sit and watch the pet.
But then I started thinking about it a bit more. I own and operate Pearson’s Professional Pet Services Company that provides the best dog training and pet sitting services for Arvada, Golden, Broomfield, Westminster, Lakewood and other West Metro Denver areas.
It all began as a training operation but then clients kept asking if I watched dogs, to which I sometimes replied (with tongue firmly planted in cheek), “Sure, I watch them do things they are not supposed to do all the time.” I believe I have a knack for dogs. (I also like cats and all animals, but can only claim the “knack” for canines).
But hey, if people want a “Certified” pet sitter or trainer to look in on their other pets, who am I to disagree? (I am certified by the Animal Behavior College).
One of my first pet sitting clients was for cats in Arvada (but she could have been in Golden, Broomfield, Lakewood, Westminster, or any of the other West Metro Denver areas I service.) I had to look up their breeds, as I didn’t know them. The owner who was holding a Glock 9mm pistol met me at the door. Since I have one as well, but don’t carry it around, it provided a topic of small talk. Since cats don’t last long outside in these neighborhoods (Coyotes), most are indoor cats. Indoor cats need to use a cat box, which gets full of yucky stuff and needs to be cleaned out regularly and changed now and then. Pearson’s Professional Pet Services can handle this.
So cleaning cat boxes is part of the job description for a pet sitter. One must really love the pet being watched, as the owner expects you to show the same attention that he/she does. With dogs and cats that’s easy. It is not as easy with other animals like birds, reptiles, snakes and such. That is one reason I try very hard to find pet sitters with affection for and experience with the type of animals to be watched.
I was watching some animals for a client in Golden (but it could have been Arvada, Broomfield, Lakewood, Westminster or any of the other West Metro Denver areas where Pearson’s Professional Pet Services company does business. This particular client had dogs (and wished they be boarded) and cats and lots of birds. My job was to make sure the Owner understood that Colorado requires a special license to board. I went over daily to feed the birds, visit the cats and dogs and make sure the cat boxes were clean. The cats, being allowed to come in and out as they please, decided to bring the owner a present, a dead mouse. I cleaned that up. One of the dogs had left a different kind of present. I cleaned that up. The birds, three of which were a form of parrot, were noisy and messy. The parrots could also be aggressive (which I learned when one decided my finger looked like a good thing to bite) and were very smart. So smart were they, that they had figured out how to open their cage by themselves.
I learned to appreciate (and respect) those birds. I also learned respect for the client who somehow found the time for a little girl, two dogs, two cats, and a bunch of birds. (She said she was not getting any fish until after they returned from vacation. I didn’t ask about reptiles).
So, rethinking what it means to be a pet sitter, I suppose I need to add that it helps to be a pooper scooper, cat box cleaner, bird brain, snake charmer or fish tank cleaner. And if you are in the market for pet services, dog training, cat and dog or other animal sitting in the Golden, Lakewood, Arvada, Broomfield, Westminster or West Metro Denver area, Pearson’s Professional Pet Services might just be your cup of tea.
